Welcome to MESPOM

MESPOM is an Erasmus Mundus Masters course in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management operated by four leading European and two North American Universities and supported by the European Commission. MESPOM prepares students for identifying and implementing solutions to complex environmental challenges, especially in an international context.

The MESPOM study programme is in English and lasts two years. The students study in at least three out of six consortium universities: the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University (Sweden), the University of Manchester (UK), Central European University (Budapest), the University of the Aegean (Lesvos, Greece), Middlebury College and its affiliate Monterey Institute for International Studies (MIIS) (USA), and the University of  Saskatchewan (UoS) (Canada).

The European Commission's Erasmus Mundus programme provides scholarships to outstanding students and to scholars to participate in teaching and research.

why you choose MESPOM

If the environment is your thing, Europe is where the action is. The EU has designed policies and adopted principles that the rest of the world is decades away from considering. If you wish to tune in to the latest in the global environmental discourse, you cannot afford to ignore the professors who teach in this program. Between the partner universities, they have the three disciplinary corners covered - the 'S', the 'P' and the 'M' in MESPOM, or, as some like to call them: Sci, Pol and Man. What is more, you get to choose which you will finally focus on. Apart from the professors from all over the world, you will hear professionals from the likes of IEA, IPCC, IAEA, European Commission, WWF and counting.

I joined in 2006 looking for a state-of-the-knowledge MSc in Environmental Policy on my way to an academic career in Policy Analysis. I assure you I got what I pursued and more. Pedagogically and technologically avant-garde, the program is forever learning and evolving itself; every cohort only gets better. So I cannot even shape your expectations to the right degree. Join to discover yourself!

The Future is Distributed, - conclude the MESPOM students in Lund

As part of the course Strategic Environmental Development the MESPOM students in Lund along with their teachers Thomas Lindhqvist and Mikael Backman produced the publication The Future is Distributed - A Vision of Sustainable Economies. The publication holds eight case studies from the energy, food and internet sector.

MESPOM alumna receives a CIWM award

In the first year of my MESPOM study I took a brilliant course in waste management taught by Prof. Thomas Lindqvist of the IIIEE, Lund University. The course was so interesting that it inspired me to start working in the waste management and resource efficiency area. I am now working for a UK based consultancy called AEA – the main advisor to the UK Government on Climate change and Renewable Energy issues, and the main consultancy involved in the Sakhalin project on behalf of the lending banks.

Preparing for the thesis adventure: a few words of advice

Greetings MESPOMers,

My name is Jennifer Lenhart, MESPOM alumna from the first batch (2005-07).

To the current students: I hope you are enjoying MESPOM and its various locations, connections, friendships and adventures!!!  :-)  As you prepare to decide your thesis subject, please know it is ok to have many topics, thoughts, uncertainties and loose-ends untied.  Actually, for those I have spoken to, it seems you have many good ideas and concrete topics. But I know it is never easy to make the final decision on what you will do, where you will do it, and what you can 'contribute' to the greater field of scientific knowledge + research.  Anyway, I thought to share a few suggestions (based on my own process of confusion and reflection):

My PhD fellowship in a leading Danish environmental research institute

I am Quynh Nguyen from Vietnam. I studied Environmental Chemistry at the University of New South Wales, Australia and worked as a technical advisor on improving institutional capacity for water pollution control at Vietnam Environment Protection Agency before joining MESPOM in 2007.

The two-year-journey has been full of great experiences and memories during which I have lived and learnt so much more intensively than ever before. The programme has indeed provided me with in-depth scientific research opportunities (from my 3rd semester and my thesis research in Manchester) in addition to the holistic approach which brings a broader and comprehensive mindset in understanding and handling any specific task in the field.

University world rankings.. looking good!

One of the MESPOM partner universities, the University of Manchester, has climbed up three places and is now ranked number 26 in the table of the world’s top 200 universities (Times Higher Education 2009). In particular, the ranking includes the results of an employer survey of 3,281 major graduate employers, making up 10 per cent of the overall result. In this category, we were one of only six universities in the UK to score a perfect 100. This evidence confirmed how highly rated The University of Manchester is amongst graduate recruiters.
