Summer for Earthquake Recovery, Corporate Social Responsibility and Green Houses in Sichuan

I come from China and joined MESPOM in 2007 after graduating from Peking University. This summer (between attending the University of the Aegean and the University of Manchester) I was an intern of Ecologia, a US organization, involved in MESPOM's ENVERA partnership. My internship took place in Chinese province of Sichuan soon after it experienced the tragic 8.0 Ms earthquake. Extraordinary things happening there go beyond the recovery efforts.

Policy adviser for Greenpeace

Since March I have been working as a junior policy adviser on genetic engineering at Greenpeace European Unit. The Unit is based in Brussels; it monitors and analyses the work of the EU institutions, exposing deficient EU policies and laws, and challenging decision-makers to implement progressive solutions. Greenpeace European Unit also plays a role in coordinating the Europe-based national and regional offices of Greenpeace. This way Greenpeace is able to influence decision-making processes at the levels where the decisions are being made: national ministries, national authorities, national parliament, European Commission, European Parliament etc.

Becoming a corporate environmental manager after MESPOM

I come from Kenya and studied at MESPOM in 2006-2008. Before joining MESPOM I worked in the Ministry of Environment of my country. My new job is very exciting and challenging I am the Environment Policy and Compliance Manager for the leading telecommunication company here in Kenya. This is a new position so I am the first environment manager and thus have to set up an environment management system, deal with all environmental complaints from the public, develop environment awareness materials for the consumers as well as the company employees. I have to coordinate both internal and external environment issues. I also coordinate CSR activities in relation to the environment, and deal with environmental impact assessment (EIA) and environmental audit (EA). I also advise the management on environmental issues. Currently I am also working on a program for clean hybrid energy systems for the company.

Sustainable Fisheries in South Africa

Prior to joininng MESPOM I had been studying and working in the biodiversity conservation field in South Africa. This was always where I wanted to end up again after finishing MESPOM. During MESPOM studies I tried to focus on topics that I felt would come in useful in this field. I was also lucky enough to focus my MESPOM thesis on the environmental policy relating to the traditional linefishery here in South Africa, which gave me valuable insights into how the small-scale fishing industry in my home country operates.

Wrapping Up

This entry has been long due and in the making. In fact, by now, it combines what could have been several. Wrapping up affairs in Lund, bidding farewell to Sweden, the galas in Budapest, a short getaway, hop in Maastricht and leaving Europe from it's putative capital to arrive in the Indian one. Back in India, deep into introspection on what had changed in my perspective, if anything. And now back in the EU via Brussels again. This could get long.

ENVERA-CEU China Initiative: Corporate Social Responsibility for Sustainable Development

Research on environmental issues in China is growing at one of MESPOM's partners - CEU’s Dept. of Environmental Sciences and Policy, which is now developed in connection to MESPOM's ENVERA partnership (Erasmus Mundus Action 3 programme). Faculty, students, and visiting scholars increasingly are drawn to understand and share useful knowledge on environmental issues in China. Environmental issues represent both opportunities and challenges in China, as elsewhere in the world.

Life after MESPOM - 2

After having graduated from MESPOM in June 2007 I started my PhD studies at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy at Central European University in Budapest. Currently I am in the very beginning of my second year in PhD program, successfully passed my comprehensive exams and have just defended my thesis prospectus.

To share a bit of after-MESPOM experience with you, I would like to say that I am very satisfied with how my professional career is developing. I work on my dissertation and am very excited about the research I am doing. Specifically I focus on the development of new bioenergy based models for organisation and action in Ukraine and look at the possibilities to link different economic actors utilising agricultural biomass for commercial energy production. I am especially excited about starting my field research in the upcoming year because this will mean communicating with people and exploring possibilities to create business opportunities for them in real life.

Environmental Issues in Canada's North - A Race Against Time

When I first arrived to Saskatoon to begin my ENVERA partnership at the University of Saskatchewan, I quickly had to remind myself of what I had recently taught my students back at the CEU, i.e. be flexible in your field work as you should expect the unexpected! On my first day here, the communities where I was to visit in northern Saskatchewan were completely evacuated due to extensive forest fires in the area. As we waited for the fires to subside, however, I became quickly involved in a number of projects ...

MESPOM on pages of IIIEE Alumni Newsletter

The Alumni Organisation of IIIEE, our network partner representing the University of Lund, has published the Issue 14 of its Newsletter. This issue features an interesting MESPOM-IIIEE discussion and gives a good feeling of what is going on at (and after!) IIIEE.

MESPOM Thesis on Biogas in Vietnam

While preparing MESPOM thesis, I decided to take advantage of our global network and focus on a topic that was not just environmental but also related to the social and economic dimensions of sustainability.
