Jessica Jewell (USA), Cohort III (2007-2009)

I graduated from Brown University with a degree in geology and then immediately did a year of graduate work in plate tectonics. During my studies I gained a keen interest in systems thinking and got the opportunity to work on rocks from all over the world including Siberia, Kyrgyzstan, and all over the United States. Following my studies, I worked at an environmental and geotechnical engineering firm in Washington DC on geological field investigations and data analysis and presentation.

Chain and Flag

Before today, I have spoken here of IIIEE and Lund helping live dreams. They have allowed more of my wishes to be fulfilled since. A supply chain sounded intriguing right from the time I was first introduced to the concept during management education. One can at best only imagine how far beyond items all around are connected to.

Hope to combine a new job with PhD studies

I am from Germany and studied Social Sciences in Bordeaux and Stuttgart as well as did an internship at UNEP in Nairobi before joining MESPOM in 2005. During MESPOM, one of the best experiences of my life, I went to Manchester for the 3rd semester, but came back to CEU for my thesis since I also worked on several research projects related to energy and sustainable buildings. I am currently a PhD-student at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy at CEU, but will start a new job at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE, in Geneva) soon. I will be working in the Secretariat of the Water Convention.

Nobel Peace Prize and MESPOM

The Nobel Peace Prize of 2007 has been awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change".

MESPOM-CEU e-learning platform

The CEU Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy and MESPOM have established a joint e-learning platform using the Moodle course management system.

Lund, first impressions

Handling four currencies in a day in the process - one of those uniquely MESPOM experiences - I arrived in Lund on an overcast, gray afternoon. This is a bit unfair to Budapest, of-course. While equally beautiful, much bigger and hence with many more sights to behold and marvel, Budapest did not get a blog entry when Sachin first set foot there last year. But then, this website did not exist and Sachin does not write blogs on lesser websites! It will be a bit of cheating to write first time experiences having spent an year there.

A short ride through a laboratory thesis project

The interaction of microorganisms with pollutants has lead to the development of an exciting field of research for environmentalists. The unprecedented interest in bioremediation and its applications stems from the failure of aggressive and invasive treatment methods that disturb ecosystems by stuffing them with unnecessary quantities of chemicals. Therefore, the use of microorganisms represents a viable, cost-effective decontamination alternative that is based on natural processes and can be scaled up for industrial or other purposes.

We are not Mountains

As Leyla and I bid farewell to Leo and Karen early this morning, the mood was nowhere near as heavy as I would have expected. Her final words before she got onto that harbinger of dorm goodbyes, the airport minibus, were the following pearls:

“We are not mountains; humans meet.”

Even as I basked inwardly in the dawn-lit glow of the wisdom of the ancients, coming from a mouth that often spouted it - punctuating many other things – I knew I would write this entry.

Environment and Security in Eastern Europe

A report on environment and security in Eastern Europe was launched on May 21st, 2007 at the OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum in Prague. What does it have to do with MESPOM? Well, as the lead author I had to apportion my time between this exciting work and equally exciting MESPOM coordination for the last year. Others from the MESPOM community - Ruben and Alexious from CEU as well as Mykhaylo (a MESPOM Scholar 2006) - were involved as well as five CEU alumni and two IIIEE alumni.

MESPOM Graduation 2007

The first MESPOM students graduated. The journey which started in September 2005 in Budapest has come to an end 20 months later.
