Huang He '09 (China): Post-Earthquake Recovery Efforts and Corporate Social Responsibility

I come from China and joined MESPOM in 2007 after graduating from Peking University. This summer (between attending the University of the Aegean and the University of Manchester) I was an intern of Ecologia, a US organization, involved in MESPOM's ENVERA partnership. My internship took place in Chinese province of Sichuan soon after it experienced the tragic 8.0 Ms earthquake. Extraordinary things happening there go beyond the recovery efforts. In particular the post-earthquake situation provided a stage for strengthening of Corporate social responsibility (CSR).

More and more entrepreneurs understand well of how to be wealthy and happy and are making great efforts to give back to society. I made a case study of "Rabbit King and Queen," Ren Xuping and Zhang Shuping who have build up an leading company of rabbit breeding in China while helping over 300,000 rural families out poverty in the last 20 years.

Their efforts include Running school to make people rich Xuping Rabbit Technical School has already trained more than 300,000 people from poor areas since 1985 which is considered as a very efficient way to alleviate poor. Movement of “Badicao” They donate parent rabbits and give technical support to seed families. And the first helped ones will go to help another families. The process goes from one family to another and expands among different villages. At present, the movement has carried out for 1518 rural families in 15 villages. In addition, this practice plays an important role in stabilizing the rural society, because over 85% of the participants are women, who have been left at home to take care of old parents and children. Xuping Research Center of Poverty Relief Xuping established a non-profit organization for poverty relief in 2006 with 5-10% of its annual profit every year. The main work of the organization includes: providing suitable projects for local people, micro-finance and network of entrepreneurs for rural development. Relief and Reconstruction after earthquake Even though their own company lost more than 8 million Yuan in the earthquake, they made great efforts to help people reconstruct their houses and restart agricultural production. Another important thing I did there was to help local people build green houses and green toilets. The green house for the reconstruction area is: low-priced (about 1/4 of the usual price), local-material-based (even the debris), easy-constructed (by unprofessional people, like peasants, with a few trainings), eco and sanitary-considered, and culture-and-tradition-concerned. Green toilet is designed for separation of urine and feces which is very helpful for the villages with no sewage.
