Olena Kiva '09 (Ukraine)

I am Olena Kiva from Ukraine (MESPOM Batch 3, 2007-2009). Although the situation on the Ukrainian job market is really tough now, I managed to get employed on the next week after the graduation. I am working for the Scientific Engineering Center “Biomass” at the Department for the Mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. This company is one of the key players in the field of bioenergy and joint implementation projects development in Ukraine.

Currently, I am working on the Ukrainian Carbon Market Facilitation Programme (implemented jointly with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development). Meanwhile I am getting comprehensive knowledge about practical aspects and legislative framework of the Kyoto mechanisms operation in Ukraine. My current job comprises the assistance in development of joint implementation legislation (as well as supplementary forms and manuals), green house gas emission modeling, preparation of trainings, cooperation with government, organization of conferences.

In addition, as an employee of “Biomass” I participated in the UNFCCC JI technical workshop and in the 5th International Conference “Biomass to Energy” (where I also took part in the work of organizing committee). At the both of these events I managed not only to find out about most up-to-date and contentious issues in the spheres discussed, but also to meet people working in the same field as me and to establish important work connections.

I have to admit that knowledge of disciplines taught on MESPOM (such as Energy and Climate Change, Waste Water Treatment, Lifecycle Analysis, Environmental Management in Organizations) helped enormously not only during my job interview, but also in everyday working routine. At the same time international experience and fluency in English made me a much more open person (both open–mined and open for communication). Hence, although I miss great time on MESPOM, I know that thanks to this programme I have lots of opportunities in life.
